The Targeted Intraoperative Radiotherapy Skills Lab 

The conference will conclude with a dedicated Skills Lab for trainees chaired by surgical oncologist, Sheldon Feldman, MD. The Lab will consist of a lecture followed by two hours of hands-on training.

Skills Lab Learning objectives are as follows:

  • Review technical aspects and radiobiology of conventional radiotherapy and intraoperative radiotherapy
  • Discuss design and results of the randomized controlled trial evaluating targeted intraoperative radiotherapy
  • Review patient selection criteria for intraoperative radiotherapy
  • Discuss integration of intraoperative radiotherapy with breast oncoplastic surgery
  • Participate in a hand-on lab to simulate wound preparation and intraoperative radiotherapy administration

The Lab will begin with a one hour lecture series covering the following topics:

  • History of IORT and Patient Selection - Dr. Dennis Holmes
  • Optimizing Intra-operative Margin Assessment - Dr. TBD
  • Axillary Management with IORT - Dr. Maureen McEvoy
  • Novel Indications / Approaches with IORT - Dr. Sheldon Feldman

Residents/Fellows will then participate in two hours of hands on training. Several leading technology companies will display their latest state-of-the-art technologies in a simulated Operating Room where participants will receive didactic and hands-on use of these breast surgical devices such as:

  • Intra-operative Radiotherapy for lumpectomy
  • Margin Assessment Devices
  • Tumor localization technologies
  • Specimen Radiography
  • Genetic Testing
  • Predictor Testing for Radiotherapy
  • Surgical Tools

All Fellows and Senior Residents are invited to participate. Trainees who are interested should complete the authorization form and application. Travel, including economy airfare, parking, and taxi, will be reimbursed (up to $500 total) within 60 days following participation in the program, two nights accommodations, and meeting registration expenses for 24 fellows and residents on a first come, first serve basis.
